Love Letters

I'm starting back up with this nonsense and enjoying it very much. Scattering these little notes around, hoping to widen their reach over time.   Here's how I imagine it:   You are walking around town and stop to tie your shoelace. Or maybe you're at a quirky coffee shop with a friend and drop your pen between the cushions of a sofa. Or maybe you are looking for a book at a library, or waiting at a bus...

Turning Tides

This morning as I stepped off my font porch I felt my hair get caught on something. Before I'd even turned my head I already knew what it was. For the past two days there has been a spider hanging out in that spot and its web had been getting bigger and bigger. Last night I had to duck when I passed it but today, in my hurry, I forgot to do so. As I...

A Teacher’s Joy

I ran into a former student of mine tonight. He was a sweet little boy in my 5th grade classroom back in 2011. The mental image I have is of him sitting in the corner desk at the front of the room, bending over his notebook and scribbling away. Today he was being recognized by the school district for his artistic abilities--he made a sculpture of a lizard out of tree bark in the style...

My Second Love

The past couple of weeks have been extremely whirlwindy with so many writing projects, so much research, so many revisions in addition to my regular to-do list, but the moment I hit that submit button on my last assignment of the semester I felt a wave of relief wash over me, man. Yesterday evening I watched a whopping three entire television episodes with my daughter, and today I decided to pull out my old pencils...

Behind the Curtain

Considering the fact that I don't really have very much in the way of what's actually on the scene (yet), this entire blog is basically a behind-the-scenes experience. Still, what I normally post here has already gone through a lot of thought, quite a bit of editing and revising, and a significant amount of polishing. It isn't completely raw because raw is messy and ugly and sometimes a little scary. But also strangely comforting, I think, at least in small...

Lines and Relief

I stumbled upon a new art medium last week and have been happily experimenting in it during my very limited free time.   It's called metal embossing and it combines everything I love about pen-and-ink drawing: bold lines, high contrast, intricate patterns, angles and curves, but it ends up looking so dramatic and stately! If you want to learn more about it, watch this video from Elitia Hart. I have ordered some actual metal sheets and official metal embossing tools,...

Roll of Thunder

I'm queasy. Feeling a little sick to my stomach right now, and it has nothing to do with those damn iron pills my doctor wants me to take. Tonight, while doing research for a paper I have to turn in tomorrow (I know that smells of procrastination, but it isn't--we have papers due every week), I came across a fascinating, haunting piece of literature. My hands are trembling. This thing shook me. I nearly cried.   I want...

Lost and Found in San Antonio

I had the privilege of attending the 5th annual San Antonio Book Festival this past weekend and enjoyed myself even more than I had intended to. The Festival itself was incredible: very well-organized with a wide range of exhibitors, speakers, activities, and delicious food. I walked away with four new books, a handy red tote, two free pins, some spicy chicken street tacos in my tummy, and a beautiful turquoise-and-onyx bracelet from Pulquerios on my wrist. :o)   I started off...

Taking Inventory

This is a photograph of the entry I made in my fancy agenda on March 29, 2016--one year ago today. I had begun the year with the intention of drawing one picture in each day's box to represent something significant that had taken place that day. The drawings began as miniature watercolors, then morphed to pen and ink drawings, then morphed to nice pencil drawings. By March they had morphed into just basic pencil sketches, and...

Minty-Fresh

I had a brand new idea for a novel over the weekend. This is eventful for me. I'm not used to this whole idea-generating thing because, although I'm pretty okay at linking words together into fairly coherent sentences, I am NOT that great at just thinking up stuff. I suck at it, actually, and that's not just me pretending to be humble. I really do struggle with creativity. It's the same way with my art....
